Andrew Muggleton Introduces “The Macassar Collection”

Macassar Ebony wood is considered one of the most lustrous
and beautiful of the ebony wood family.

Longmont, CO (November 24, 2008) -- Andrew Muggleton (www.AndrewMuggleton.com) has decided to offer something special: a new take on his popular pieces, using one of the most unique and rare woods in the world.  The new Macassar Collection features the use of Macassar Ebony wood, considered one of the most lustrous and beautiful of the ebony wood family.

To be able to work with this wood is a crowning achievement for most wood workers, but it comes with a price.  Macassar Ebony is notoriously more difficult to bend; being more dense than standard woods. These qualities make for an extremely durable piece, but also require an expert hand to get the job done.

What sets this collection apart from his other pieces are details such as biscuit tuft upholstered leather seats, ¾” glass tops on the console tables, tapered curves and the perfectly matched veneer as it wraps around the entire piece.

The Macassar Collection features and arched, interlocking coffee table, end table and wave console; a chaise lounge, stool and free-form lighting. www.andrewmuggleton.com/macassar.htm

  • The Arched Coffee Table presents a modish contrast between the Macassar ebony arch and the Stainless Steel shelf.  The arch tapers out as it reached towards the ground. The glass top is secured by four Stainless Steel supports and the stainless steel is available in different brushed finishes.

  • The two piece interlocking Macassar Ebony end table fits together without glue and supports a 1/2" glass top. Stainless steel supports are used at both ends.
  • The Console Table features two pieces of tapered Macassar Ebony, which slide through each other fitting together without glue to create a seamless, elegant look. Stainless steel is used at one end and supports a 3/4" thick glass top.

  • Stainless Steel waves are attached to a tapered Macassar Ebony curve and supports a 3/4" glass top on the Macassar Wave Console.
  • The Macassar Chaise Lounge features beautifully stitched and upholstered leather supports secured to stainless steel curved rails. The headrest is also upholstered in leather. The base is curved and tapered in Macassar Ebony, which is considered one of the most lustrous and beautiful of the ebony wood family. It is a very dense wood, making for an extremely durable piece of furniture. The seat can be positioned at an infinite number of angles for reading or simply relaxing.

  • The Macassar Stool is similar in style to the Oster Stool. With Macassar Ebony for the legs, bisected by one large tail also in Macassar Ebony and the seat is upholstered in leather. Different color leathers are available.  The footrest is finished in stainless steel.
  • The free-form lights come ready for canopy installation with steel cables and include 50-watt halogens bulbs. Tastefully done in Macassar Ebony with brushed stainless steel lights and frosted glass.

Bent Macassar Ebony ends enclose the natural flowing arched base of the bench, and the seat is upholstered in rich, biscuit tuft upholstered leather that is as comfortable as it is durable.

These qualities, while creating more work for the furniture maker, “also make for an extremely durable piece,” added Muggleton.   The Macassar Lotus Bench measures 20” W x 60” L) x 31”H.  Also available in 23”W x 71” L x 31”H.

ABOUT ANDREW MUGGLETON
Andrew Muggleton designs and creates innovative, high-quality modern and contemporary furniture by bending and shaping exotic woods and blending other materials such as metal and glass to achieve the desired concept.  “Everything in nature is curved - from the smooth pebbles on a beach to an egg. Sharp jagged edges do not make you feel at ease, but a field of straw bending in the wind, that is inviting,” says Muggleton, explaining the why his work involves such beautiful subtle curves.

Simplicity in life is difficult and complicated to achieve. It is easy to have too much going on and spend too much time organizing it. This is the same approach Andrew takes when designing furniture. Keeping the design simple is one of his most difficult - and rewarding - challenges. It is this desire for simplicity which helps Andrew avoid the common trap of filling empty space with unnecessary clutter.   To view more of Andrew Muggleton’s work, visit www.AndrewMuggleton.com.

Lawrence Savage Galleries Adds
Contemporary Furniture Designer Andrew Muggleton

Miami, FL (November 19, 2008) – Lawrence Savage Galleries, with locations in Coral Gables and the Miami Design District, announced today that it will represent contemporary furniture designer / maker Andrew Muggleton, whose work will be available at both galleries.  Savage, who met the designer at a show in Palm Beach, said he was immediately taken with Muggleton’s work, and the two quickly struck a deal. “I just love his furniture and his sense of style,” said Savage, “and I think he will add an exciting new dimension to both galleries.”    The galleries are located at 66 N.E. 40th Street, in the Design District, and 4217 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables.  Telephone (305) 446-1222.

Andrew Muggleton is a true artisan who creates stunning furniture designs, many of which are one-of-a-kind.  In designing his contemporary furniture, Muggleton combines extraordinary woods with metal and glass to create furnishings with spare, elegant lines. Dining room tables and chairs, console tables, beds, entertainment units and sets of drawers are crafted with a nod to comfort and an eye towards beauty.  His furniture designs are innovative but not complicated, and usually feature large curves and a mix of materials - solid wood, veneer, metal and glass.

SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY
Much like Henry David Thoreau, a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, simplicity is a hallmark of Muggleton’s design philosophy. “Keeping a design simple and avoiding the trap of filling empty space with unnecessary clutter is my most difficult - and most rewarding - challenge,” says the British born designer who now works out of his studio in Longmont, Colorado.  “Simplicity in life is difficult and complicated to achieve,” added Muggleton. “It is easy to have too much going on and spend too much time organizing it.”

COMPLEX PROCESS YIELDS GRACEFUL ELEGANCE
Muggleton creates high quality modern furniture by bending and shaping exotic woods and blending other materials such as metal and glass to achieve the desired outcome.  “The method of making curved furniture is a complex process, which has been practiced for centuries,” says Muggleton, who went on to explain: “Many thin layers of wood are joined together, placed on a mould and inserted into a vacuum press. The vacuum press shrinks itself around the mould, contorting the wood over the new shape. The press delivers a cumulative pressure of almost 4 tons over the new design.”  Once the body of the work had been created in this way, says Muggleton, the same process is used to apply beautiful veneer onto the surface.

Elements of engineering, structure and architecture are all incorporated into Muggleton’s work, and each serve to inspire him daily. “Buildings, bridges and archways new and old all provide a fundamental foundation for my designs,” he says.  Explaining his affinity for creating curved furniture, Muggleton says, “Everything in nature is curved, from the smooth pebbles on a beach to an egg. Sharp jagged edges do not make you feel at ease; but a field of straw bending in the wind, now that is inviting. This is the reason my work involves such beautiful and subtle curves.”

FURNITURE DESIGNER ANDREW MUGGLETON ANNOUNCES MACASSAR EBONY COLLECTION AT ICFF

Collection in Booth #2269 Exclusive to Design Centers

LONGMONT, Colo., May 17, 2008 — Andrew Muggleton, a modern contemporary furniture designer and maker, is introducing his Macassar Ebony line of curved furniture at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, May 17-21, 2008, in Booth #2269.
Based on previous works, Muggleton’s new line reveals a maturing design concept that expresses a more harmonious balance within the materials he uses.  Each piece is inspired by, and reminiscent of, curves found in nature, from water-smoothed pebbles to straw bending in the wind. He uses advanced veneering techniques and tapers the curves to create his consoles, benches, tables, stools and other pieces in wood, glass, metal and leather.  The line can be viewed at http://andrewmuggleton.com/macassar.htm
“I’ve always loved Macassar Ebony, and have been waiting for the right time to use it in my work,” said Muggleton.  “I believe it’s a stunning wood that reminds me of my travels throughout the world.”
Grown in India and Indonesia, Macassar Ebony contains a striped mix of brown and black that create depth and movement, and is often considered a pedigree of exotic hardwoods used in many museum-quality pieces.
Muggleton’s work has been traditionally sold through galleries; with this new line he hopes to give exclusive rights to design centers through the United States and Europe.  “This is a new direction for me both artistically and professionally,” Muggleton added.  “I’ve developed a distinctive logo and am marketing this line aggressively.”
The Macassar Ebony collection will grow through 2008, leading to more elaborate pieces developed over the next year.  Prices start at $1800 for barstools.
